With all surfaces covered in knotty pine, black appliances, and only a small window over the sink for natural light, this kitchen was dark even on the sunniest of days. It was also inefficient; the dining room is on the other side of the stove wall. Because that meant carrying food through a hallway to get there, the dining room was rarely used.
